PROFINET is intolerant against any difference between the physical submodule configuration (set by the example) of a slave and the theoretic one given by the GSDML file. The PROFINET master will report something like 'hey, there is a module configured in the GSDML, but the real slave tells me is it not there'.
- This video explains where to find the PROFINET® description files for SEW devices. After downloading, it shows how to install these GSDML files in Siemens' T.
- PROFINET Configuration. For easy configuration, here you can find the suitable GSDML files for our PROFINET measuring amplifiers of the EMGZ series. Select the appropriate GSDML file based on the firmware version of your device. Please feel free to contact our Customer Service with any questions: info @ fms-technology. Com or +41 44 852 80 80.
Description
The PROFINET System Redundancy (PNSR) requires the Profinet IO Devices are S2 type. The ‘S’ denotes that the IO Device has single network support. The ‘2’ denotes that the network supports two connections as a set. Each of these connections will be established by each of the two Profinet Controllers.Solution
The GSDML file provides information about the Profinet IO Device. With the GSDML file, it can be confirmed if the IO Device can be used in PNSR by one of two options:- A GSDML file of version 2.3 or higher is required in order to configure the device to be redundantly controlled
- (using PME) Once the IO Device has been configured as IO Device in a Controller:
- Double click on the Device in Navigator
- Select GSDML details tab
- Following properties can be saw:
All about GSD files
GSD files contain information about the basic capabilities of a device. All devices are shipped with a GSD file, or a file can be downloaded from this web site or the vendor's own web site. With a GSD file, system integrators can determine basic data such as the communications options and the available diagnostics.

GSDML are GSD files written in XML format. They describe the features of the PROFINET device model. GSDML editing can be accomplished with standard XML editors and should comply with ISO 15745, the base for device descriptions. The aim is to allow better integration of devices into an engineering tool.
It is not an objective of the GSDML format to describe technological functions or the graphical user interface of a device. For this purpose concepts such as TCI, FDT, EDD should be used.
The GSDML specification can be downloaded here. There is also a tool available for viewing and checking PROFINET GSD files, which can be downloaded here. Both packages contain examples of PROFINET GSD files which can be used as a starting point for your own development.

PROFIBUS GSD Files
GSD files have a standard file format, which is described in the PROFIBUS guidelines. PNO has developed a GSD Editor to assist the manufacturer when setting up GSD files for PROFIBUS DP slave devices. The editor includes a syntax and semantics check according to the GSD specifications. Members of PI can download the GSD Editor free of charge from the PROFIBUS Web site at www.profibus.com.
Members of PI additionally can publish their GSD files free of charge with their product description at Products at www.profibus.com, if the GSD files conform to the PROFIBUS specifications. Download the GSD specification here...
