FAQ
How do I find the most realistic text to speech voices?
The highest-quality text to speech online software, predictably, turned out to be from giants like Google, Microsoft, IBM and Amazon. But these platforms aren't designed for end users. Rather, they're meant as a B2B solution. To start converting text to speech users need to create accounts with each platform, update lots of settings and even to code. That's why we created Kukarella, which gives users an easy access to the most realistic voices from the most popular providers. You can listen to the voices in the editor or on this page.
Standard terms of service Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM give ownership of resulting sound recording copyrights for the recorded files to the user of the application, as long as the text is an original text created or otherwise legally used by the application user. That means that if you hold the copyright to the text, you hold the copyright to the recordings as well. The crucial consideration governing that right is that you 'Created' the work, meaning that there is a modicum of creativity. Kukarella allows commercial use of audio, created with any paid plan.
Enter your text in the text area in Kukarella; Select the language and the voice or voices you want to use; Apply any effects to key parts of the text, such as 'whisper', 'breath' etc.; Click 'convert'; Success! You can now listen to, download, and share your generated audio mp3 file.
When choosing an online solution for converting text to speech, it is recommended that you pay attention to the number of languages and realistic voices offered by the service; the ability to add special effects; conversion cost; and the ability to download and/or share the converted audio files.
What effects can be applied to text to speech voices?
Google, Microsoft, IBM and Amazon allow adding effects to their voices. However, the type of effects, as well as their quantity varies between the platforms. For example, you can add pauses or change pitch on all platforms, but only Amazon gives the ability to add a whisper. If you want to experiment with voice effects (including Amazon’s), you can do that on the 'voices with effects' page.
Feel free to use the generated audio for any of your projects (commercial or personal). It's free! Hope it's useful for you :)
This online tool lets you generate a Microsoft Samstyle voice (not the exact original) that you can play and download easily.
Just wait for it to load (it may take a minute or so as it's a 2mb piece of software) then type your text in the box and click 'Speak'. You can download the speech by clicking the link that will appear under the 'Speak' button.
Old-school text to speech is great fun to play around with. Try testing it on long or hard to pronounce words, use it to narrate your silly YouTube video, post it as a message to a friend's facebook wall - the possibilities are endless.
All thanks goes to @kripken for porting the library to JavaScript!

If there's anything I can do to improve 'Microsoft Sam Online', please let me know!
Note: I was alerted in the comments to the fact that this is not quite the Microsoft Sam voice! It's apparently the voice synthesizer used by Ubuntu. I'll keep my eye out for a JavaScript port of the actual Microsoft Sam voice and update this translator if I find it. Until then I hope that you found this page mainly looking for a general computerised voice rather than the exact Microsoft Sam accent. Sorry for the inconvenience!
